Recited especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays · Also on Hanuman Jayanti and daily by devoted practitioners

It consists of an introductory Doha, 40 Chaupai verses (the "Chalisa"), and a concluding Doha. Pronunciation and tune vary by region — this rendering follows the widely recited North Indian tradition. Regional variations exist and are equally valid.

How to Perform Ganesh Aarti

1
Prepare the Aarti Thali
Place a ghee or oil deepak on an aarti thali (plate). Also keep flowers, akshat and kumkum on the thali. Light the deepak. Some traditions also place camphor on the thali — use with care in ventilated spaces.
⚠️Use a stable, heat-resistant aarti thali. Keep it away from curtains and flammable materials. Never leave the flame unattended.
2
Ring the Bell
Begin ringing a bell continuously while the aarti is sung. The bell sound is considered to awaken divine presence and create a sacred environment. The bell is rung with the left hand while the aarti thali is waved with the right hand.
3
Wave the Aarti Flame
Wave the aarti thali with the lit deepak in slow clockwise circular motions before the Ganesh murti or photo. The traditional pattern is: starting from the lotus feet, moving up to the navel, then to the face, then in a wide circle around the entire form.
4
Sing the Aarti
Sing the Jai Ganesh aarti verses together. All family members may join in the singing. The aarti is typically sung 3, 5 or 7 times (the full set of verses), depending on family tradition.
5
Distribute the Aarti Flame
After the aarti, present the flame to each person present. They cup their hands over the flame and pass the warmth over their face as a gesture of receiving the blessing. This is a symbol of accepting the divine light.
🪔Ghee and oil lamps require stable placement on heat-resistant surfaces. Keep flames away from children, curtains and loose clothing. Do not leave lit lamps unattended.

🪔 Deity: Nav Durga 📅 Festival: Sharad & Chaitra Navratri ⏱ Duration: 9 days 🏠 Home puja: Yes 🧑‍🎓 Level: Intermediate
Editorial review · NamoBhakti · Last reviewed 2026 · Regional practices vary — see notes throughout
Regional, family and sampradaya traditions vary significantly. Consult your family's kul purohit for specific requirements, especially for Havan and Durga Saptashati path.

About Navratri

Navratri ("Nav" = nine, "Ratri" = nights) is celebrated in honour of the divine feminine — Devi Shakti in her nine forms (Nav Durga). It is observed twice yearly: Chaitra Navratri (spring, March–April) and Sharad Navratri (autumn, September–October). Sharad Navratri is the more widely celebrated of the two.

The puja involves establishing a sacred Ghata (kalash), daily Devi worship, recitation of Durga Saptashati or other stotra, and concluding with Kanya Pujan and Havan on Ashtami or Navami.

In Gujarat the festival is associated with Garba and Dandiya Raas. In Bengal it culminates in Durga Puja with elaborate murti and visarjan. In South India a Golu (doll display) is observed. Each tradition is equally valid. This guide presents the widely followed North Indian home puja tradition.

The Nine Forms of Durga (Nav Durga)

Day 1 — Shailaputri
Daughter of the Himalayas. Rides Nandi (bull). Symbol: crescent moon.
Day 2 — Brahmacharini
The ascetic form. Holds rosary and water pot. Symbol: tapas (austerity).
Day 3 — Chandraghanta
Half-moon on forehead. Rides tiger. Symbol: bravery and peace.
Day 4 — Kushmanda
Creator of the universe. Rides lion. Symbol: cosmic energy.
Day 5 — Skandamata
Mother of Kartikeya (Skanda). Rides lion. Symbol: motherhood.
Day 6 — Katyayani
Warrior goddess. Rides lion. Symbol: destruction of evil.
Day 7 — Kalaratri
Dark complexion, destroyer of darkness. Symbol: fearlessness.
Day 8 — Mahagauri
Extremely fair complexion. Rides white bull. Symbol: purity.
Day 9 — Siddhidatri
Giver of all siddhis (powers). Rides lion. Symbol: fulfilment.

Puja Samagri List

Check items as you gather them. Optional and substitute items are noted.

🛡Use incense and camphor in well-ventilated spaces. Place lamps on stable, heat-resistant surfaces away from children and flammable materials. Never leave flames unattended. For Akhand Jyot, ensure a safe, monitored setup throughout the nine days.

Step-by-Step Navratri Puja Vidhi

1
Shuddhi — Purification of Self and Space
Bathe and wear clean clothes — traditionally white, yellow or red during Navratri. Clean the puja area thoroughly. Sprinkle Ganga jal or plain water over the puja items with a tulsi or mango leaf while chanting a purification prayer.
ॐ अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा।
यः स्मरेत् पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यंतरः शुचिः।।
Om apavitrah pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato'pi vā। Yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bāhyābhyaṁtaraḥ śuciḥ।।
Whether pure or impure, in whatever state — one who remembers the lotus-eyed Lord (Vishnu) is purified within and without.
📝Simple, sincere water sprinkled with intention is considered purifying in home puja. Shraddha (faithful attention) matters more than elaborate ritual when resources are limited.
2
Ghatasthapana — Establishing the Sacred Kalash (Day 1)
On Pratipada (the first day), establish the divine presence for all nine days. Fill the earthen or copper kalash with clean water. Place mango leaves at the rim. Set a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top. In a clay pot or flat vessel beside the kalash, place moist soil and sow barley (jaau) seeds — these sprout over nine days as a sign of auspiciousness.
ॐ कलशस्य मुखे विष्णुः कण्ठे रुद्रः समाश्रितः।
मूले तत्र स्थितो ब्रह्मा मध्ये मातृगणाः स्मृताः।।
Om kalaśasya mukhe viṣṇuḥ kaṇṭhe rudraḥ samāśritaḥ। Mūle tatra sthito brahmā madhye mātṛgaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ।।
Vishnu is in the mouth of the kalash, Rudra at its neck, Brahma at its base, and the divine mothers in its middle — the kalash holds all divine presence.
In many traditions Ghatasthapana must be performed at the Abhijit muhurat on Pratipada. In others, any auspicious morning time is acceptable. Consult a local panchang for the day's timings.
3
Akhand Jyot — Continuous Flame (Optional)
Many families light an Akhand Jyot (continuous flame) that burns throughout all nine days. Use a large clay deepak with mustard oil or ghee. The flame must not be allowed to go out — this requires careful attention and safety planning. Place it in a fireproof area, away from curtains and flammable materials.
⚠️Akhand Jyot requires a dedicated, safe, supervised location. If maintaining it is not practically safe in your home, lighting a fresh lamp each day of puja is equally devotionally valid. Safety takes precedence.
4
Sankalp — Setting Intention
Hold akshat and flowers in joined hands and state your intention for the nine-day puja — expressing devotion and gratitude. Traditional sankalp includes the date, place, your name and the purpose.
ॐ विष्णुर्विष्णुर्विष्णुः। अद्य ब्रह्मणोऽह्नि... शुभतिथौ...
अहं (नाम) नवरात्रि व्रतं करिष्ये।
Om Viṣṇur viṣṇur viṣṇuḥ… I, (name), on this auspicious tithi, undertake the Navratri vrat (observance).
Sankalp wording varies by tradition. A simple sincere statement of intention in your own language is entirely acceptable in home puja.
5
Daily Devi Puja — Nine Days
Each day, worship the form of Nav Durga corresponding to that day. Offer red flowers, kumkum, akshat and a lit deepak. Recite or listen to Durga Saptashati chapters (or a portion), Durga Chalisa, or Devi aarti — according to your tradition and practice level. Many families do a morning and evening puja.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।
Yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śaktirūpeṇa saṁsthitā। Namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ।।
The Goddess who dwells in all beings as Shakti (energy) — I bow to her, I bow to her, I bow to her again and again. (Devi Mahatmyam / Durga Saptashati)
6
Kanya Pujan — Worship of Young Girls (Ashtami or Navami)
On Ashtami or Navami, invite young girls (kanya) — considered embodiments of the nine forms of Devi. Wash their feet, apply kumkum tilak, offer flowers, serve prasad (halwa, puri, chana is traditional) and give dakshina (a small gift). Treat them with great respect and joy throughout — they are honoured as the Goddess herself.
The number of kanyas varies from 2 to 9 by family tradition. The emphasis is on genuine respect and hospitality — not spectacle. If hosting is not possible, contributing to a girl-child education cause is a meaningful alternative observed in many families today.
🌸Children should participate willingly and joyfully. Their comfort and dignity must always come first. The purpose is reverence, not performance.
7
Daily Aarti — Morning and Evening
Perform aarti each morning and evening. The Jai Ambe Gauri aarti is widely sung during Navratri. Wave the aarti lamp with a bell in a circular motion before the Devi murti and distribute the aarti flame to family members.
8
Havan — Sacred Fire Offering (Dashami/Navami)
On Navami or Dashami, a havan is performed to conclude the puja. Offerings of samagri, sesame seeds (til), ghee and other items are made into the havan kund. A qualified priest is recommended for first-time performers.
⚠️Havan involves an open fire. Use only in an open, well-ventilated space. Keep a safe distance with children. Never leave the fire unattended. Follow fire safety rules applicable in your country.
9
Visarjan — Concluding Prayers (Dashami)
On Vijay Dashami (Dussehra), offer farewell prayers to the Devi. Immerse the kalash water in a clean flowing water body (river, pond) or your garden. Return the sprouted barley shoots to the earth. The Devi is thanked for her presence over the nine days and is lovingly sent on her way.
गच्छ गच्छ परमेशानि, स्वस्थाने परमेश्वरि।
यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवाः तत्र गच्छ मनोरमे।।
Gaccha gaccha parameśāni… Go, O supreme Goddess, to your divine abode where Brahma and the devas dwell — go, O delightful one.

Navratri Fasting Guidance

Fasting during Navratri is a personal spiritual observance. Common practices include complete fasting, fruit-and-milk fasting, or eating one simple meal. Permissible foods vary by family tradition — kuttu (buckwheat), sabudana (sago), sendha namak (rock salt) and certain fruits are widely observed.

🌿Those who are pregnant, unwell, elderly, managing a medical condition or taking medication should consult a qualified healthcare professional before fasting. Puja can be performed fully without fasting — devotion does not require physical hardship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Many families perform the full nine-day puja at home without a priest, following their family tradition. For Ghatasthapana and Havan, priestly guidance is helpful for beginners. A sincere home puja is fully valid. The key is shraddha — faithful, mindful devotion.
Practices vary by family and regional tradition. Some follow traditional restrictions; others do not. This is a personal decision guided by one's family tradition. NamoBhakti does not prescribe or prohibit — we respectfully acknowledge that traditions differ.
Performing what you can with sincere devotion is considered meaningful in Bhakti traditions. Missing a day does not invalidate the puja. A brief prayer acknowledging the missed day and resuming the next day is sufficient in most family traditions.

Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi — Complete Guide

Samagri, Kalash, Panchamrit, Katha and Sheera Prasad — for home and priest-led puja

🔱 Deity: Shri Vishnu / Satyanarayan 📅 Occasion: Purnima, Ekadashi, housewarmings, special occasions ⏱ 2–3 hours 🏠 Home puja: Yes
Editorial review · NamoBhakti · Last reviewed 2026
Regional and sampradaya practices vary. Many families perform this puja on Purnima, others on Ekadashi, housewarmings, or important family occasions. Consult your family tradition or priest.

About Satyanarayan Puja

Satyanarayan Puja is a popular Vaishnava puja honouring Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayan — the "Lord of Truth." It is performed on Purnima (full moon), Ekadashi, housewarmings (Griha Pravesh), weddings, and on occasions of gratitude or prayer. The puja includes a katha (sacred story) that is recited or listened to.

The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha originates from the Skanda Purana (Reva Khanda) and narrates five stories illustrating the importance of fulfilling vows and the grace of Satyanarayan. The puja is widely performed across North India, Maharashtra, Gujarat and by the Hindu diaspora worldwide.

In Maharashtra the puja is sometimes called "Satyanarayan Pooja" and includes specific Maharashtrian prasad variations. In some South Indian traditions a similar puja to Vishnu is performed under different names. This guide presents the widely followed North Indian tradition.

Puja Samagri

Panchamrit Preparation

Panchamrit is a sacred mixture of five items used for abhishek (bathing the deity). It is also distributed as prasad.

ItemQuantity (approx.)Significance
Cow's Milk (Dugdha)½ cupPurity and nourishment
Curd (Dadhi)2 tbspProsperity
Honey (Madhu)1 tspSweet speech and joy
Ghee (Sarpi)1 tspStrength and vitality
Sugar / Mishri (Sharkara)1 tspSweetness and happiness

Mix all five gently in a copper or silver bowl. The Panchamrit is first offered to the Vishnu murti as abhishek, then collected and distributed as prasad. Some traditions add Ganga jal (sacred water) and basil leaves.

Step-by-Step Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi

1
Shuddhi and Preparation
Bathe, wear clean clothes (yellow or white preferred). Clean and decorate the puja area with flowers or rangoli. Set up the murti on a clean cloth or wooden puja stand. Arrange all samagri in front.
2
Ganesh Puja — First Invocation
Begin by invoking Shri Ganesh — every auspicious Hindu puja starts with Ganesh vandana. Offer flowers, akshat and a prayer to Ganesh before proceeding to Satyanarayan puja.
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः
Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ
3
Kalash Sthapana
Fill the copper kalash with water. Add mango leaves at the rim. Set a coconut on top. Tie mauli (red-yellow thread) around the kalash neck. Invoke all sacred rivers into the kalash water. Place it to the right of the Vishnu murti.
ॐ कलशाय नमः। गंगे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति।
नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेऽस्मिन् सन्निधिं कुरु।।
Om Kalaśāya Namaḥ… May the sacred waters of Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri be present in this water.
4
Sankalp
Take water, akshat and flowers in joined hands and state the sankalp — including today's date, tithi, your location and the purpose (e.g., Satyanarayan Vrat Katha sravana).
5
Shodashopachara Puja — Sixteen Offerings to Satyanarayan
Offer the sixteen traditional acts of reverence: Invitation (Avahana), Seat (Asana), Foot-water (Padya), Hand-water (Arghya), Sipping-water (Achamana), Bath (Snana), Garment (Vastra), Sacred thread (Yajnopavita), Sandalwood (Gandha), Flowers (Pushpa), Incense (Dhupa), Lamp (Deepa), Food (Naivedya), Betel nut (Tambula), Gift (Dakshina) and Farewell (Visarjan).
6
Panchamrit Abhishek
Gently pour the prepared Panchamrit over the Vishnu murti or photo while chanting. Collect the Panchamrit in a vessel below for distribution as prasad later. Follow with a clean water rinse.
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय। पञ्चामृतस्नानं समर्पयामि।।
Om Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya। Pañcāmṛtasnānaṁ samarpayāmi।।
Om, salutation to Vasudeva — I offer the panchamrit bath.
7
Satyanarayan Katha — Sacred Story Reading
The katha is read or recited (or listened to from a reliable source). It consists of five chapters, each narrating a story of devotees who performed the Satyanarayan Vrat. All present should listen attentively. Women may also hold the katha volume. The katha typically takes 45–60 minutes to complete.
The Satyanarayan Katha is sourced from the Skanda Purana (Reva Khanda). Traditionally a priest reads the katha; in home puja the head of the family may read it. All chapters should be read together for the puja to be complete according to traditional practice.
8
Aarti
After the katha, perform the Satyanarayan / Vishnu aarti — "Om Jai Jagdish Hare." Wave the aarti lamp in circular motions, ring the bell, and distribute the aarti flame to all present.
9
Sheera Prasad Distribution
The traditional prasad for Satyanarayan Puja is Sheera — a sweet dish made of wheat flour (suji/rava), ghee, milk, sugar and banana. It is first offered to the deity, then distributed to all present and to neighbours. No one should leave without receiving prasad.
In some traditions the prasad must not be refused when offered. Regional prasad variations exist — in Maharashtra, banana is not always added; in some communities the prasad is different. Follow your family tradition.

FAQs — Satyanarayan Puja

The most commonly observed occasions are Purnima (full moon day of every month), Ekadashi, housewarmings, weddings, business openings and as a vow fulfillment on special occasions. Many families perform it regularly on Purnima, while others do it on specific life events. There is no single mandatory occasion — it depends on family tradition and personal vow.
Yes, many families perform Satyanarayan Puja at home without a priest by following the vidhi themselves. The head of the family or any adult family member may read the katha. A priest's presence adds ceremonial depth and correct Sanskrit recitation, which many families appreciate for major occasions.
Traditionally, late arrivals should not consume prasad and instead hear the katha in full at another time. In home puja practice, this is applied flexibly — the important thing is respectful presence and intention. Consult your family tradition or priest for specific guidance.

Kanya Pujan Vidhi — Complete Guide

Worshipping young girls as embodiments of Nav Durga on Ashtami and Navami

🌸 Occasion: Navratri Ashtami / Navami🏠 Home puja: Yes👧 Age: 2–10 years typically
Kanya Pujan is an act of reverence and hospitality. Children's comfort, dignity and willingness should always come first. The purpose is joyful, genuine worship — not performance or spectacle.

Significance of Kanya Pujan

Kanya Pujan is the practice of honouring young girls as living embodiments of the nine forms of Devi (Nav Durga) during Navratri. On Ashtami or Navami, families invite girls to their home, wash their feet, apply tilak, offer flowers and serve a meal — treating them as the Goddess herself.

The practice reflects the Shakta tradition's understanding that the divine feminine is present in all living beings, especially in the innocence and purity of children. It is a deeply moving act of bhakti when performed with genuine reverence rather than routine.

The number of kanyas varies by family tradition — some invite 9 (one for each Devi), others invite 2, 3, 5 or 7. An odd number is considered auspicious in many traditions. Age ranges also vary — most traditions specify pre-pubescent girls, typically between 2 and 10 years of age.

Samagri for Kanya Pujan

Kanya Pujan Vidhi — Step by Step

1
Invitation and Welcome
Invite the girls (and their families, if appropriate) in advance. Welcome them warmly at the door. Offer them a seat on a clean aasan (cloth). The home should be clean, decorated and welcoming — this is receiving the Goddess herself.
2
Charanodaka — Washing of Feet
Gently wash each girl's feet with clean water in a small vessel. This act symbolises the tradition of honouring guests and the divine — the same reverence shown to a sacred deity's lotus feet. The water is then considered sacred.
पाद्यं समर्पयामि — देवीस्वरूपाभ्यो नमः।
Pādyaṁ samarpayāmi — I offer water for the feet. Salutation to these embodiments of the Goddess.
3
Tilak — Applying Kumkum
With a ring finger, gently apply a kumkum tilak on the forehead of each kanya. The tilak is a mark of honour, blessing and recognition of the divine in the person before you. Some families also apply akshat after the tilak.
4
Flower Offering and Aarti
Offer flowers to each kanya. Perform a brief aarti — wave the deepak in a small circular motion before each girl as you would before a Devi murti. Ring a bell if available. This is a profoundly moving moment of recognising the divine in a living human being.
5
Prasad Meal — Bhoj
Serve the traditional prasad meal — Halwa, Puri and Chana. Ensure the food is freshly prepared, warm and plentiful. Serve with love and care. In many traditions, the host family eats only after the kanyas have been served and honoured. Do not rush — this is a sacred meal.
Regional variations exist for the prasad meal. Some families serve kheer, puri and different sides. Follow your family tradition. Ensure dietary restrictions and allergies of the children are respected.
6
Dakshina and Gifts
Offer each kanya a small dakshina (a coin, a small gift, or a thoughtful token). In many families a new dupatta, bangles, a small toy or something practical is given. The amount is not important — the spirit of generous giving is the intention.
7
Respectful Farewell
See the girls off with warmth and gratitude. Seek their blessings — a simple gesture of respect to them as they depart, honoured as the Goddess who visited your home.
Important Guidance on Conducting Kanya Pujan
  • Children's comfort, willingness and dignity come before ritual completeness. If a child is uncomfortable, anxious or resistant, honour that immediately.
  • Do not photograph or film without the express consent of the children's parents/guardians and appropriate sensitivity.
  • Girls should not be treated as ceremonial props. They are the centrepiece of genuine devotion — the interaction should feel warm, respectful and joyful.
  • If hosting in-person kanya pujan is not possible, families may perform a symbolic puja to Devi and contribute to a girl-child education or welfare cause as a meaningful alternative.
  • Invite girls from your community regardless of their background. The Goddess does not discriminate.

Overall Meaning

"We meditate upon the divine light of the most excellent Savitri (the cosmic sun), who illumines all three realms — may that divine radiance inspire and guide our intellect."

The Gayatri Mantra is a prayer for spiritual illumination and guidance of the intellect — not a request for material blessings. It is addressed to the divine light (bharga) of Savitri, understood as the cosmic solar principle or the supreme divine reality, asking that it direct our minds toward truth and wisdom.

The mantra is found in the Rigveda (3.62.10) and is considered one of the most important and universally revered mantras in the Hindu tradition. It is the central mantra of the Upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony) and is traditionally chanted three times daily — at sunrise, noon and sunset.

How and When to Chant

🌅
Pratah Sandhya — Sunrise
The most auspicious time for Gayatri japa. Face the rising sun. After bathing, sit in a clean, quiet space. Chant 108 times on a mala (rosary) if observed, or as many times as your practice permits. Even 3, 11 or 21 repetitions with full attention are meaningful.
🌞
Madhyahna Sandhya — Noon
The midday sandhya is observed by many Brahmin households and traditional practitioners. Face the sun. Chant the mantra with a focused mind.
🌆
Sayam Sandhya — Sunset
The evening sandhya is performed at sunset. Face west (toward the setting sun). This is a time of reflection and offering of the day's activities to the divine.
Traditional initiation into Gayatri Mantra practice is typically given by a qualified guru or family priest during Upanayanam or at a dedicated Gayatri initiation ceremony. Reciting the Gayatri Mantra for personal devotion and study is widely practiced. For formal upasana (spiritual practice), seek guidance from a qualified teacher.

Common Questions

Practices vary by tradition. In some traditional contexts the formal Gayatri upasana requires initiation through the Upanayanam ceremony. However, many contemporary teachers and traditions hold that the Gayatri Mantra is a universal prayer that anyone may recite with devotion. Seek guidance from your family tradition or a respected teacher.
Traditional practice specifies 108 repetitions at each sandhya. Common practice varies from 3 to 1008 repetitions. Quality of attention is more important than quantity. Even a single sincere recitation has value. Use a mala (108-bead rosary) to count, or simply chant with mindful attention.
The three Vyahritis (Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ) represent the three lokas (realms) — earth, atmosphere and heavens — as well as the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, deep sleep) and the three aspects of time (past, present, future). Chanting them acknowledges the presence of the divine across all dimensions of existence.

मुक्षीयMukṣīyaMay I be freed / may liberation be granted — a prayer for moksha (liberation)
मा अमृतात्Mā AmṛtātNot from immortality — do not separate me from the eternal; I seek liberation into immortality, not away from it

Complete Meaning

"We worship the three-eyed one (Shiva), the sweet-scented nourisher of all beings. As a ripe cucumber is naturally freed from its vine, may we be liberated from the bondage of death — but not separated from immortality (may we be freed into eternal life, not away from it)."

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is one of the most powerful mantras in the Vedic tradition. Found in the Rigveda (7.59.12) and later in the Yajurveda and other texts, it is a prayer to Shiva as the master of death and liberation. The profound wisdom of the mantra lies in its request — not to escape death through fear, but to achieve the ripeness of a life well-lived, so that liberation comes naturally, like a fruit falling from a vine.

The mantra is traditionally chanted 108 times with a rudraksha mala during Shiva puja, Maha Shivratri, Rudrabhishek, and whenever facing illness, difficulty or the approach of death. It is also chanted as a healing prayer for oneself or others.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is traditionally chanted by those who have received proper initiation. Chanting for devotion and learning is widely practiced. For formal japa sadhana, seek guidance from a qualified guru or teacher.

Satyanarayan Vrat Katha — Overview

📜 Source: Skanda Purana (Reva Khanda)🔱 Deity: Shri Vishnu / Satyanarayan
The Satyanarayan Katha must be read in full during the puja. This page provides an overview of each chapter for preparation and understanding. The complete traditional katha text should be sourced from a printed puja book or a reliable publisher. NamoBhakti provides this overview for educational purposes — do not substitute this summary for the full katha.

About Satyanarayan Vrat Katha

The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha is a set of five sacred stories (kathas) narrating the glory and importance of observing the Satyanarayan Vrat. These stories are found in the Skanda Purana, Reva Khanda, and are traditionally read or heard during the Satyanarayan Puja.

The katha narrates how Lord Vishnu, in the form of Satyanarayan, appeared before Narad Muni and instructed him about this vrat — its method, its benefits and the consequences of neglecting it. The five stories illustrate both the grace of faithfully observing the vrat and the difficulties that arise from ignoring or disrespecting it.

🌿The vrat's purpose is devotion, gratitude and the fulfilment of a sincere vow to the Lord — not the extraction of material benefits through ritual. Approach the katha with shraddha (faith) and attention.

Chapter Overview

Adhyaya 1 — Origin of the Vrat

Narad Muni, observing the suffering of humanity, asks Lord Vishnu how mortals can be relieved of their troubles. The Lord reveals the Satyanarayan Vrat — a simple yet powerful observance that any person, regardless of caste, gender or social status, can perform with devotion and receive blessings.

Adhyaya 2 — Story of the Woodcutter and the Brahmin

A poor Brahmin and a woodcutter separately perform the Satyanarayan Vrat with sincere devotion. The Lord blesses both — the Brahmin's long-held wish is fulfilled and the woodcutter's poverty is transformed through honest effort and grace. This chapter emphasises that sincere devotion, not elaborate ritual, is the heart of the vrat.

Adhyaya 3 — Story of the Merchant Sadhu and His Wife Lilavati

A merchant named Sadhu is blessed with a daughter after performing the vrat but neglects to fulfil his vow of repeating the puja. He faces hardships and eventually rediscovers devotion through difficulty. This chapter teaches the importance of honouring vows sincerely and not treating the Lord's grace as a transaction.

Adhyaya 4 — Story of the King Ulkamukha

A king witnesses a Brahmin performing the Satyanarayan Puja on the banks of a river. After participating devoutly, the king and his kingdom are blessed with peace and prosperity. This chapter illustrates how respectful participation in another's devotion is also meritorious.

Adhyaya 5 — Story of the Merchant Tungadhvaja

A wealthy merchant arrogantly refuses to accept prasad offered at a Satyanarayan Puja, insulting the Lord's grace. He faces immediate consequences — the loss of his wealth and family members. Only upon returning with humility, taking the prasad and performing the puja himself are his troubles resolved. This chapter emphasises the virtue of humility and respect for devotional offerings.

How to Listen to the Katha

During the Satyanarayan Puja, the katha is traditionally read by the priest or the head of the family. All present should sit attentively and listen — this listening (shravana) itself is a form of devotion. Women and men equally participate in listening to the katha. Some traditions specify that listeners should hold yellow flowers or akshat in their joined hands while listening.

The complete Satyanarayan Katha takes approximately 45–60 minutes to read in full. Do not skip chapters or summarise — the puja is considered complete only when all five chapters have been recited or heard. Printed puja books (available at puja stores or temple bookshops) are the appropriate source for the full text.
This overview is for educational preparation only. The full katha must be read from a printed source during the actual puja. NamoBhakti does not publish the full katha text to ensure accuracy — please obtain a reliable printed edition.

Purpose, substitutes, eco-friendly alternatives and safety notes for every common puja item

This guide lists the most commonly used items in Hindu puja with their Hindi name, English name, purpose, common substitutes and safety notes. Regional names and usage may vary. Consult your family tradition or priest for specific puja requirements.
Akshat — अक्षत
Unbroken Rice

Purpose: Offered to deities as a symbol of completeness and blessing. The word "akshat" means "unbroken" — the intact grain symbolises wholeness and auspiciousness.

Note: Must be unbroken, clean rice grains. Wash and dry before use.

Kalash — कलश
Sacred Vessel / Pot

Purpose: The kalash (pot) filled with water, topped with mango leaves and coconut represents the complete divine presence — all deities, sacred rivers and cosmic forces are invoked within it.

Substitute: Copper, brass or silver. Earthen pot used for Navratri Ghatasthapana. Avoid plastic.

Kumkum — कुमकुम
Red Powder / Vermillion

Purpose: Used for tilak on deity and devotees. Red is the colour associated with Shakti, auspiciousness and the sacred feminine. The tilak marks the Ajna chakra (third eye) as a point of divine focus.

Eco note: Prefer natural kumkum (turmeric + lime based) over synthetic chemical powders.

Deepak — दीपक
Oil Lamp / Diya

Purpose: The lamp represents the dispelling of darkness and the presence of divine light. In the aarti, the flame is offered to the deity and received by devotees as a blessing.

Oils: Ghee (clarified butter) is traditional; sesame or mustard oil is also widely used. Coconut oil in South India.

⚠️ Safety: Always place on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Keep away from children and flammable materials. Never leave unattended.
Bilva Patra — बिल्व पत्र
Bel / Wood Apple Leaves

Purpose: Bilva (bel) leaves are considered especially sacred to Shiva. The three-leafed form represents the three eyes of Shiva, the trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh), and the three gunas. They are offered in Shiva puja, Rudrabhishek and Maha Shivratri.

Note: Offer intact, undamaged three-lobed leaves. Available at most puja stores and many parks/gardens with bel trees.

Tulsi — तुलसी
Holy Basil

Purpose: Tulsi is considered the most sacred plant in Vaishnavism — it is essential for Vishnu and Krishna puja and is never omitted from naivedya offerings to Vishnu. The tulsi plant itself is worshipped in many homes.

Note: Do not use in Shiva puja or offer to Shiva — this is a traditional distinction in most schools. Use fresh leaves; do not offer wilted or brown leaves.

Chandan — चंदन
Sandalwood Paste

Purpose: Sandalwood paste (applied to the murti and as a tilak) has a cooling, calming fragrance associated with purity and spiritual discipline. It is used in most pujas as a gandha (scent) offering.

Eco note: Pure sandalwood is expensive and sandalwood trees are threatened — synthetic alternatives are widely available. If using authentic sandalwood, ensure it is ethically sourced.

Kapur — कपूर
Camphor

Purpose: Camphor is burned during aarti and has a purifying, aromatic quality. Its complete combustion — leaving no residue — symbolises the ego dissolving completely in the presence of the divine.

⚠️ Camphor burns at very high temperature. Use only in small quantities on a fireproof surface. Keep away from children. Store in a sealed container away from heat sources.
Mauli / Kalaave — कलावा
Sacred Thread

Purpose: The red-yellow (or red) sacred thread is tied around the kalash during puja and around the wrist of the worshipper after sankalp. It is a symbol of protection, the divine presence and a reminder of one's vow or intention.

Note: Traditionally tied on the right wrist for men and married women, left wrist for unmarried women — though practice varies by family tradition.

Eco-Friendly Puja Guidance
  • Use clay or biodegradable diyas — avoid plastic or synthetic options.
  • For Ganesh Chaturthi visarjan: use clay (mitti) idols that dissolve in water — avoid Plaster of Paris or chemical paint.
  • Minimise single-use plastic in puja packaging. Buy from local stores or use items from your own garden where possible.
  • Natural incense sticks (agarbatti) made without chemical binders are preferable — especially important for indoor air quality.
  • Flower offerings can be composted after puja rather than immersed in rivers, which reduces river pollution.

Ganesh Puja Vidhi — Complete Guide

Daily puja, Ganesh Chaturthi, modak offerings, aarti, visarjan and eco-friendly guidance

🐘 Deity: Shri Ganesh · Vinayaka 📅 Chaturthi, daily ⏱ 30 min – 1 hour 🏠 Home: Yes 🧑‍🎓 Beginner
Ganesh is traditionally worshipped first in every Hindu puja. His blessing is sought before beginning any auspicious work. Regional traditions for Ganesh worship and Chaturthi celebrations vary significantly — particularly between Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and North India.

About Ganesh Puja

Shri Ganesh (also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, Vighnaharta) is the son of Shiva and Parvati and is revered as the remover of obstacles and the lord of new beginnings. He is invoked at the start of every auspicious occasion — weddings, pujas, business openings, examinations and journeys.

The Ganesh Chaturthi festival (Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi) is particularly important, celebrated over 1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days with sthapana (installation), daily worship and visarjan (immersion). The festival is especially prominent in Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Samagri for Ganesh Puja

Do not offer Tulsi leaves to Ganesh — Tulsi is offered to Vishnu/Krishna but avoided in Ganesh puja according to tradition. Do not offer the ketaki flower either.

Step-by-Step Ganesh Puja Vidhi

1
Shuddhi — Purification
Bathe and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja area. Sprinkle water with a tulsi leaf for purification. Set up the Ganesh murti on a clean cloth or wooden peetham (seat).
2
Deep Prajwalan — Lighting the Lamp
Light the ghee deepak and incense. The flame is the first act of welcome — an offering of light to the divine. Face east or northeast for puja, if possible.
3
Ganesh Avahana — Inviting the Lord
Invite Shri Ganesh to the puja with folded hands and a sincere prayer. Sprinkle a few drops of water around the murti.
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः। श्री गणेशाय नमः।
आवाहनं समर्पयामि।
Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ। Śrī Gaṇeśāya Namaḥ। Āvāhanaṁ samarpayāmi।
Salutation to Ganapati. I offer the invocation to Shri Ganesh.
4
Shodashopachara Puja — Sixteen Offerings
Offer the sixteen traditional acts of worship — seat, water, flowers, incense, lamp, food offering and more. For daily puja, a simplified Panchopachara (five offerings) is common: gandha (sandalwood), pushpa (flowers), dhupa (incense), dipa (lamp), naivedya (food).
5
Durva Offering
Offer durva grass (doob) in bunches of three or five blades tied together, touching the feet of the Ganesh murti. Durva is uniquely sacred to Ganesh — it is said to be especially pleasing to him. Offer 21 bunches for special occasions.
ॐ गणाधिपतये नमः। दूर्वांकुरान् समर्पयामि।
Om Gaṇādhipataye Namaḥ। Dūrvāṅkurān samarpayāmi।
Salutation to the Lord of the Ganas — I offer these durva shoots.

Modak Offering — Naivedya
Offer modak (or another sweet) as the naivedya — food offering to Ganesh. Modak is traditionally Ganesh's favourite: a sweet dumpling made of rice flour (steamed/ukadiche modak) or wheat flour (fried modak) filled with coconut and jaggery. Place it before the murti and offer with a simple prayer.
ॐ विघ्ननाशाय नमः। नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि।
Om Vighnanāśāya Namaḥ। Naivedyaṁ samarpayāmi।
7
Aarti — Jai Ganesh Deva
Sing the Jai Ganesh aarti while waving the lit deepak before the murti. Ring the bell continuously. This is a joyful, communal act of worship. After the aarti, pass the flame to all present to receive the divine blessing.
8
Pradakshina and Pranam
Perform pradakshina (circumambulation) around the Ganesh murti — 3 or 5 times, moving clockwise. In home puja with a small murti, mentally perform pradakshina or simply bow with folded hands. Offer the final pranam (salutation) and take prasad.

Ganesh Chaturthi — Special Guidance

For Ganesh Chaturthi, the murti is established (sthapana) on the Chaturthi day with full puja. Daily puja, aarti (morning and evening) and offerings of modak and durva are performed over the celebration period (1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days). The festival concludes with Visarjan (immersion).

Eco-Friendly Visarjan Guidance
  • Use only clay (mitti) Ganesh idols that dissolve naturally in water — avoid Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols which cause serious river and lake pollution.
  • Avoid chemical paints — use natural colours (turmeric, kumkum, natural dyes) only.
  • Consider home immersion in a bucket of water — the water can then be used to nourish a garden or plant.
  • Many temples and municipal bodies now offer collection points for eco-friendly immersion — check your local options.
This guide does not guarantee any outcome from the puja. Ganesh puja is an act of devotion, gratitude and seeking of blessings — not a commercial transaction.

Hanuman Puja Vidhi — Complete Guide

Tuesday and Saturday worship, Chalisa path, Sundarkand and Hanuman Jayanti puja

🌿 Deity: Shri Hanuman 📅 Tuesdays, Saturdays, Hanuman Jayanti ⏱ 30–60 min 🏠 Home: Yes 🧑‍🎓 Beginner

About Hanuman Puja

Shri Hanuman is revered as the embodiment of devotion (bhakti), strength (bal), wisdom (buddhi) and unwavering service (seva) to Shri Rama. He is worshipped especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, considered his auspicious days. His puja involves the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, Sundarkand path and specific offerings.

Samagri for Hanuman Puja

The practice of anointing Hanuman with sindhoor comes from the story in which Sita blessed Hanuman — seeing him apply sindhoor from head to toe in devotion to Rama, she blessed him that whoever anoints Hanuman with sindhoor will receive his blessings. This is a widely observed practice but not universal across all traditions.

Step-by-Step Hanuman Puja Vidhi

1
Bathe and Prepare
Bathe and wear clean clothes — traditionally orange, red or saffron for Hanuman puja. Light a ghee deepak and incense before the Hanuman murti.
2
Sindhoor and Chameli Oil Anointing
Mix sindhoor with a small amount of chameli oil and gently apply it to the Hanuman murti. This is the most distinctive feature of Hanuman puja. Offer red flowers and garland.
ॐ आञ्जनेयाय नमः। सिन्दूरं समर्पयामि।
Om Āñjaneyāya Namaḥ। Sindūraṁ samarpayāmi।
Salutation to the son of Anjana (Hanuman) — I offer sindhoor.
3
Hanuman Chalisa Path
Recite the Hanuman Chalisa — all 40 chaupai and both dohas. Many devotees recite it 3, 7 or 11 times on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Recite slowly and with full attention, understanding the meaning of each verse. The Chalisa is the heart of Hanuman worship.
4
Sundarkand Path (Optional)
Sundarkand (the fifth kanda of the Ramayana) describes Hanuman's journey to Lanka in search of Sita. Its recitation is considered especially meritorious and is done on Tuesdays, Saturdays, Hanuman Jayanti and on special occasions. It takes approximately 2–3 hours for full recitation.
5
Aarti
Perform the Hanuman aarti (Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki). Wave the aarti flame with devotion and ring the bell.
6
Prasad — Besan Ladoo or Boondi
Offer besan ladoo, boondi or another sweet as naivedya. Distribute prasad to all present. Many devotees also offer banana, jaggery or paan to Hanuman.

Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the Chaitra Purnima (full moon) in most North Indian traditions and on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi in some South Indian traditions. On this day, extended puja, Chalisa recitation, Sundarkand path and community aarti are performed. Temples hold special programs and many devotees observe a fast.

Practices vary by tradition. In many traditions and temples, women worship Hanuman without restriction. Some older temple practices have traditional restrictions — these vary from temple to temple and family tradition. At home, sincere devotion and recitation of the Chalisa and aarti are practiced by women across India. Follow your family tradition and personal conviction.
Common practice is 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 21 or 108 times depending on the occasion and personal vow. Daily recitation of one complete reading is the most common practice. Quality of attention is far more important than the number of repetitions. A single sincere, attentive recitation is more valuable than many mechanical ones.

The Panchakshara (five syllables: Na-Ma-Śi-Vā-Ya) is the root mantra of Shaivism. Each syllable represents one of the five elements that compose the universe and one of the five actions of Shiva (Panchakritya). When prefixed by "Om Namaḥ", the mantra becomes the six-syllable Shadakshara.

The mantra means: "Salutation to Shiva" — but more deeply, it is a proclamation that the individual self (jiva) bows to and merges with the cosmic self (Shiva). The word "Namah" also means "not mine" (na + mah) — a declaration of surrender of ego.

Source and Tradition

Om Namah Shivaya is found in the Krishna Yajurveda's Sri Rudra (Namakam), specifically in the eighth anuvaka: "Namaḥ śivāya ca śivatarāya ca" — "Salutation to Shiva and to one more auspicious than Shiva." It is the central mantra of Shaiva Siddhanta and is revered across all Shaiva traditions.

The Panchakshara is the most widely chanted Shiva mantra across India — from the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition of Tamil Nadu to the Virashaiva tradition of Karnataka, the Kashmiri Shaivism school and the broad devotional Shaivism of North India. The mantra is universal within Shaivism.

How to Chant

Om Namah Shivaya can be chanted at any time — there are no restrictions on place, time or state of mind for sincere devotional chanting. It is the nature of this mantra that it can be chanted continuously, mentally or aloud, during all daily activities.

Guides for beginners, families and those learning puja vidhi

🙏
How to Perform Daily Puja

A simple introduction to daily morning puja at home — achamana, deepak lighting, offering flowers, chanting and concluding prayers.

The minimum daily puja can be as simple as: light a deepak, offer a flower, chant "Om" or a brief prayer, and prostrate with gratitude. Elaborate rituals are wonderful but never required for sincere devotion.

🔥
Meaning of Aarti

Aarti (from "Arati" — without darkness) is the offering of a flame to the deity as an act of devotion. The circling flame represents the cosmic fire and the removal of spiritual darkness.

The five elements are present in the aarti — earth (the plate), water (the vessel used), fire (the flame), air (the fan if used) and space (the bell's sound filling the atmosphere). The aarti is a microcosm of the universe being offered to the divine.

📿
Importance of Sankalp

Sankalp is the formal declaration of intent before a puja or vrat. It includes the date, tithi, your name, location and your purpose. It transforms an ordinary act into a sacred offering.

The sankalp anchors the puja in present moment awareness — it is the moment of fully showing up. Even a simple "O Lord, I begin this puja in your honour, with gratitude and devotion" is a complete sankalp.

🪔
How to Arrange a Puja Thali

The puja thali (plate) typically contains: kumkum, akshat (rice), flowers, a deepak, agarbatti, a bell, and prasad. These represent the five sense-offerings — sight (flame), smell (incense), taste (prasad), touch (flowers) and sound (bell).

🧒
Involving Children in Puja

Children learn best through observation and gentle participation. Allow them to ring the bell, hold flowers, light the deepak (with supervision), distribute prasad and join in singing the aarti.

Explain what you are doing in simple language. Never force participation — joyful curiosity grows into lifelong bhakti. Safety around flames and incense should always take precedence.

🌐
Puja for Diaspora Families

Many Hindu families worldwide perform puja with available resources. Substituting local flowers for traditional ones, using available oils, and adapting the ritual to your space is entirely valid.

Many Indian grocery stores worldwide stock puja samagri. Online stores ship internationally. The spirit of bhakti — love, attention and devotion — cannot be substituted, and it is all that matters.

Lakshmi Puja Vidhi — Diwali and Regular Worship

Kalash sthapana, Shri Sukta context, aarti, prasad — for Diwali and all Lakshmi worship occasions

🪷 Deity: Goddess Lakshmi 📅 Diwali, Fridays, Purnima ⏱ 1–2 hours 🏠 Home: Yes 🧑‍🎓 Beginner
Editorial review · NamoBhakti · Last reviewed 2026 · Regional practices vary — especially Diwali Lakshmi Puja timing and muhurat
Lakshmi Puja is an act of devotion, gratitude and seeking of blessings — not a transaction guaranteeing wealth or material prosperity. NamoBhakti does not make or endorse any such claims.

About Lakshmi Puja

Goddess Lakshmi is the divine embodiment of prosperity, grace, beauty, light and spiritual abundance. She is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is revered across all Hindu traditions. Lakshmi is not merely the goddess of material wealth — she is the presiding deity of all forms of abundance: health, wisdom, courage, victory, progeny and beauty (the Ashta Lakshmi — eight forms of Lakshmi).

Lakshmi Puja is performed on Diwali (Amavasya of Kartik month) — the most widely observed occasion — and also on every Friday (Shukravar), on Purnima (full moon), during Navratri, on Akshaya Tritiya and whenever a family wishes to express gratitude or seek blessings.

In North India, Lakshmi and Ganesh are worshipped together on Diwali night. In Bengal, Lakshmi Puja is a separate Purnima observance. In South India, Deepavali is associated with Goddess Lakshmi and Ashta Lakshmi. The puja form varies — this guide presents the widely followed North Indian home tradition.

The Ashta Lakshmi — Eight Forms

Adi Lakshmi
The primordial Lakshmi — first manifestation of the Goddess
Dhana Lakshmi
Goddess of wealth and material prosperity
Dhanya Lakshmi
Goddess of food, grains and nourishment
Gaja Lakshmi
Goddess of power and royalty — flanked by elephants
Santana Lakshmi
Goddess of progeny and family blessings
Veera Lakshmi
Goddess of courage, valour and strength
Vijaya Lakshmi
Goddess of victory and success in all endeavours
Vidya Lakshmi
Goddess of wisdom, education and knowledge

Puja Samagri

Step-by-Step Lakshmi Puja Vidhi

1
Preparation — Cleanliness and Decoration
The most important preparation for Lakshmi Puja is cleanliness — of the home, the puja area and oneself. Clean the home thoroughly on Dhanteras (two days before Diwali). On the puja day, decorate the entrance with rangoli (kolam), light diyas at the doorway, and hang marigold torans. Cleanliness and orderliness are associated with Lakshmi's presence.
The tradition of drawing Lakshmi's footprints (small feet made with rice flour) leading from the entrance into the home and toward the puja area is followed in many North Indian homes — symbolising the Goddess entering and blessing the home.
2
Ganesh Puja First
Begin every puja with the worship of Shri Ganesh. Offer flowers, akshat and a prayer to Ganesh, seeking his blessings for an obstacle-free puja.
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः। श्री गणेशाय नमः।
Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ। Śrī Gaṇeśāya Namaḥ।
3
Kalash Sthapana — Sacred Vessel
Fill the copper or brass kalash with clean water. Add five or seven mango leaves. Place a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top. Tie a red mauli thread around the neck. Draw an Om or swastika symbol on the kalash with kumkum. Invoke the sacred rivers into the kalash water.

Lakshmi Avahana — Inviting the Goddess
Place the Lakshmi murti or photo on a clean, elevated wooden peetham (seat) covered with a red cloth. Offer a seat, water for the feet (padya) and water for the hands (arghya) symbolically. Invite the Goddess with flowers and a sincere prayer.
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः। आवाहनं समर्पयामि।
श्री महालक्ष्मी देव्यै नमः।
Om Śrīṁ Mahālakṣmyai Namaḥ। Āvāhanaṁ samarpayāmi।
Salutation to Mahalakshmi — I offer the invocation. Salutation to Goddess Mahalakshmi.
5
Panchamrit Snan — Abhishek
Offer the panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar) bath to the Lakshmi murti. Apply each item gently and then offer a clean water rinse. Collect the panchamrit in a vessel and keep as prasad. (Panchamrit abhishek is done primarily to the murti, not to a photo.)
6
Shodashopachara — Sixteen Offerings
Offer the sixteen traditional services: asana (seat), padya (water for feet), arghya (water for hands), achamana (water for sipping), snana (bath — panchamrit), vastra (cloth — red), yajnopavita (sacred thread), gandha (sandalwood), pushpa (flowers especially lotus), dhupa (incense), dipa (lamp), naivedya (food offering), tambula (betel nut and leaves), dakshina (gift), and concluding with a namaskara (bow).
7
Shri Sukta — Context and Optional Chanting
The Shri Sukta is a hymn from the Rigveda (Khila section) praising Goddess Lakshmi as the embodiment of abundance, light, lotus and grace. It is one of the oldest known hymns to Lakshmi. In many traditions it is recited during the puja — typically 11 or 16 verses.
हिरण्यवर्णां हरिणीं सुवर्णरजतस्रजाम्।
चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो म आवह।।
Hiraṇyavarṇāṁ hariṇīṁ suvarṇarajatasrajām। Candrāṁ hiraṇmayīṁ lakṣmīṁ jātavedo ma āvaha।।
O Jataveda (Agni — the fire), bring to me that Lakshmi — golden-hued, shining like the sun, wearing garlands of silver and gold, radiant as the moon, the golden goddess Lakshmi. (Shri Sukta, Verse 1)
The Shri Sukta should ideally be learned from a qualified teacher for correct pronunciation. For home puja, reciting even the first verse with attention is considered meaningful. The full sixteen-verse Shri Sukta is available in puja books and reliable scripture editions.
8
Lakshmi Mantra Japa
Chant the Lakshmi mantra 108 times with a lotus-seed mala or simply with folded hands. The most widely used mantras:
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः
Om Śrīṁ Mahālakṣmyai Namaḥ
Salutation to the great goddess Lakshmi — "Shrim" is the bija (seed) mantra of Lakshmi.
ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं लक्ष्मीभ्यो नमः
Om Hrīṁ Śrīṁ Lakṣmībhyo Namaḥ
Salutation to Lakshmi — with the bija mantras Hrim and Shrim.
9
Aarti — Om Jai Lakshmi Mata
Perform the Lakshmi aarti "Om Jai Lakshmi Mata" — waving a ghee deepak (or aarti thali with multiple diyas on Diwali) in clockwise circular motions before the Goddess. Ring the bell. All family members sing together. Distribute the aarti flame.
10
Chopda Puja (Diwali tradition — some communities)
In the Marwari, Gujarati and some North Indian business communities, account books (chopda/bahi-khata) are also worshipped on Diwali as a way of seeking Lakshmi's blessings for the new financial year. The new ledgers are opened and the first entries made with reverence. This is a regional tradition — follow your family's practice.
11
Prasad — Distribution
Distribute prasad — traditional offerings include kheer (rice pudding), panchamrit, panjiri (in North India), or any sweet. On Diwali, mithais (sweets) are widely distributed to all family members, neighbours and guests. In many traditions, no one should go without prasad.

Diwali Lakshmi Puja — Timing

The Diwali Lakshmi Puja is traditionally performed during Pradosh Kaal (after sunset, typically about 1.5 hours after sunset) on Amavasya (new moon night). Some traditions specify Nisitha Kaal (midnight) for Kali worshippers. The exact timing — Pradosh Kaal, Vrushaba Kaal or Sthir Lagna — varies by regional tradition and panchang. Consult your local panchang or priest for the exact muhurat for your city.

In 2026, Diwali falls in October. Exact dates and muhurat vary by location. Always verify with a reliable panchang source for your specific city and tradition before setting the puja time.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Lakshmi Puja is an act of devotion and gratitude, not a guarantee of material outcomes. NamoBhakti does not endorse any such claim. The purpose of Lakshmi Puja is to cultivate an attitude of abundance, gratitude and cleanliness — qualities that the Goddess embodies. Material outcomes depend on many factors, including effort, circumstances and karma.
Lakshmi can be worshipped on any day with sincere devotion. Fridays (Shukravar) are traditionally considered auspicious for Lakshmi worship. Additionally, Purnima, Diwali, Akshaya Tritiya and the Navratri period are widely observed occasions. Daily puja to Lakshmi at one's home altar is a beautiful practice.
Lotus flowers are considered most sacred to Lakshmi. White and pink roses, white marigolds, fragrant jasmine (mogra) and yellow marigolds are all widely offered. Red hibiscus is also offered in some traditions. The flowers should be fresh and clean. Avoid withered or artificially coloured flowers.

Shiva Puja Vidhi — Daily Puja and Maha Shivratri

Bilva patra, abhishek items, Om Namah Shivaya, Maha Mrityunjaya and Rudrabhishek overview

🔱 Deity: Shri Shiva · Mahadev 📅 Mondays, Shivratri, Pradosh ⏱ 30 min – 2 hours 🧑‍🎓 Beginner to Advanced

About Shiva Puja

Shiva — the Supreme Being in the Shaiva tradition — is the Lord of yoga, meditation, destruction and transformation. He is simultaneously the terrifying Bhairava who destroys what is old and the serene yogi who dissolves the ego. Shiva worship includes both the simple devotion of a daily puja with Bilva patra and the elaborate Rudrabhishek.

Shiva is most auspiciously worshipped on Mondays (Somvar), on Maha Shivratri (the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of Phalguna or Magha month), on every Pradosh Vrat (13th day of each fortnight) and during Savan (Shravan month — July–August).

Shiva puja has immense regional variation — from the Lingayat tradition of Karnataka to Kashmiri Shaivism, from the Nath sampradaya to popular North Indian tradition. This guide presents widely followed home puja practices. For formal Rudrabhishek, always seek guidance from a qualified priest trained in Vedic recitation.

Samagri for Shiva Puja

Do not offer Tulsi leaves (considered for Vishnu) or Ketaki flowers to Shiva according to tradition. Dhatura (Datura) is a traditional offering to Shiva but is highly toxic — handle with extreme care, wash hands thoroughly after handling, and keep away from children.

Step-by-Step Shiva Puja Vidhi

1
Achamana — Purification
Begin with achamana — sip small amounts of water three times while chanting. This purifies the body and mind before commencing the puja.
ॐ केशवाय नमः। ॐ नारायणाय नमः। ॐ माधवाय नमः।
Om Keśavāya Namaḥ। Om Nārāyaṇāya Namaḥ। Om Mādhavāya Namaḥ।
2
Shiva Dhyana — Meditation and Invocation
Sit in a comfortable posture, close your eyes and visualise Shiva — seated on Mount Kailasha, crescent moon on his forehead, Ganga in his matted hair, the third eye, trident in hand, draped in tiger skin, deep in meditation. Hold this image in your mind before beginning the puja.
ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचन्द्रावतंसम्।
रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम्।।
Dhyāyennityaṁ maheśaṁ rajatagirinibhaṁ cārucandravataṁsam…
Ever meditate on Mahesh (Shiva) — white as a silver mountain, adorned with the beautiful moon, his limbs brilliant with gems, holding axe, deer, boon and protection in his four hands — serene.
3
Shivalinga Sthapana and Panchamrit Abhishek
Place the Shivalinga or murti on a copper puja stand or clean surface. Begin the abhishek — pour panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar) slowly over the Linga from a copper vessel while chanting. Follow with Gangajal abhishek. The flowing liquid symbolises the offering of oneself and all one's possessions to Shiva.
ॐ नमः शिवाय। स्नानं समर्पयामि।
Om Namaḥ Śivāya। Snānaṁ samarpayāmi।
Om Namah Shivaya — I offer the bath.
💧Perform abhishek slowly and reverently. The liquid should flow over the Linga gently — not poured quickly. Collect the abhishek liquid (teertha) in a vessel below — it is considered extremely sacred and can be sipped as prasad or sprinkled on the home.
4
Bilva Patra Offering
Offer bilva (bel) leaves to the Shivalinga — each three-lobed leaf should be intact and undamaged. Touch each leaf to the Linga while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya." Even a single bilva leaf offered with deep devotion is considered equivalent to elaborate worship according to the Shiva Purana tradition.
त्रिदलं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिनेत्रं च त्रिधायुतम्।
त्रिजन्मपापसंहारं बिल्वपत्रं शिवार्पणम्।।
Tridalaṁ triguṇākāraṁ trinetraṁ ca tridhāyutam। Trijanmapāpasaṁhāraṁ bilvapatraṁ śivārpaṇam।।
This three-lobed leaf representing the three gunas, the three eyes (of Shiva) and the three streams of time — I offer this bilva leaf to Shiva, destroyer of the sins of three lives.
5
Om Namah Shivaya Japa
Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108, 216 or 1008 times on a Rudraksha mala. This is the heart of daily Shiva puja. The panchakshara mantra can be chanted mentally (manasika japa), whispered (upanshu japa) or aloud (vachika japa).
6
Maha Mrityunjaya Japa (Optional)
For Maha Shivratri, serious illness in the family, or special occasions, chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times. This mantra seeks liberation from the fear of death and seeks divine grace for healing and liberation.
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्।।
Om Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe…
We worship the three-eyed Shiva… may we be freed from the bondage of death.
7
Shiva Aarti — Om Jai Shiv Omkara
Perform the Shiva aarti "Om Jai Shiv Omkara" waving a ghee deepak before the murti. Ring the bell. Distribute the aarti flame to all present.
8
Prasad
Distribute the abhishek teertha as prasad — sip a small amount. Also offer and distribute fruits or a simple sweet. Panchamrit from the abhishek is the primary prasad of Shiva puja.

Maha Shivratri — Special Guidance

Maha Shivratri (the great night of Shiva) is observed with night-long vigil, extended puja and fasting. The night is divided into four praharas (periods) — one puja with abhishek is ideally performed in each prahara. The night vigil (jaagaran) is a central feature — devotees remain awake through the night singing bhajans, reciting the Shiva Chalisa and meditating.

🌿Maha Shivratri fasting is a full-day fast, typically broken the next morning. Those with medical conditions, the elderly, pregnant women and children should not fast without medical consultation. Puja can be performed without fasting.

Rudrabhishek — Overview

Rudrabhishek is an elaborate Vedic abhishek to Lord Shiva involving the recitation of the Sri Rudra (Shri Rudrashtadhyayi) from the Krishna Yajurveda — specifically the Namakam and Chamakam — by qualified Vedic priests. The abhishek is performed with 11 or 108 pots of various liquids (water, milk, panchamrit, sugarcane juice, coconut water) poured over the Shivalinga.

Rudrabhishek requires Vedic Sanskrit recitation by qualified priests (those who have studied the Vedic recitation tradition). It cannot be correctly performed from a book by an untrained person. If you wish to perform Rudrabhishek, engage a qualified Vedic priest. Home Shiva puja with Om Namah Shivaya and bilva patra is a complete, valid and deeply meaningful practice.
